Pom Pom Pillows

Pom pom pillows are a fun and easy way to add a decorative touch to your design. I have seen so many gorgeous cushions that have featured a pom pom trim, so I thought I’d give it a try!

I am making two cushions that are 45cm x 45cm with a 2cm seam allowance’s. I am wanting to have some fun with the idea of pom poms so I will be using two types of pom poms. The first pillow will be made with a pom pom trim.
The second pom pom pillow I will be making 12 pink pom poms to feature as the trim on the cushion, learn how to make pom poms via this link.
The back of both of the cushions will feature a zipper in the centre to allow for an easy opening to insert the pillow (zipper tutorial coming soon).

Firstly you will need the following for one pillow:

  • 1m of fabric of your choosing
  • Pom pom trim that matches or compliments the fabric or hand made pom poms
  • Thread
  • Zipper
  • Pillow insert

Now lets get started with pom pom trim pillow

Lay out your fabric on a large smooth surface, mark out your front square 49cm x 49cm including a 2cm seam allowance. Once you have marked out the front cover, cut out the pattern piece.

Mark out your two back patterns, 26.5cm x 26.5cm including the 2cm seam allowance, cut out two patterns.

Overlock all your pieces or zip zag stitch if you do not have an overlocker.

Place the back pieces right face together and insert a zipper joining the two back pieces (Zipper tutorial coming soon).

Pin down your pom pom trim so that the pom poms are facing the centre.

Sew the trim down with a straight stitch, be careful on the corners as you will need to fold the trim to turn the corner.

Place the front piece right side down on top of your back piece so that the right sides are facing each other. Pin the fabric piece’s together and sew with a 2cm seam allowance.

Turn the pillow inside out and insert your pillow.

For the hand made pom pom pillow, cut out your fabric pieces, overlock the edges and install the zipper.

Lay the back piece right face up and pin down each pom pom so that the tail off the pom pom is on the outside of the pillow. When you have all your pom poms in place, carefully sew the pom poms, ensure they don’t move as you don’t want the pom poms to have a long tail.

After sewing the pom poms in place, out the front piece down so that the right sides are together. Pin in place and carefully sew leaving a 2cm seam allowance.
